SECRETARY YOUNG TO READ TO BATTLEBORO FIFTH GRADERS TUESDAY Joins Governor Perdue, others for Read Across America

RALEIGH – N.C. Crime Control and Public Safety Secretary Reuben Young will read to fifth grade classes at Coker Wimberly Elementary School in Battleboro as a part of the Read Across America program at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Supported by Gov. Bev Perdue, the initiative will send the First Gentleman, Cabinet Secretaries and other North Carolina leaders into classrooms across North Carolina.

The school is located at 1619 N.C. 97 West, Battleboro. Interested media should check in at the main office before proceeding to the classroom.

Secretary Young is the department's 11th secretary and oversees the State Highway Patrol, Emergency Management, N.C. National Guard, Alcohol Law Enforcement, Butner Public Safety, Civil Air Patrol and the Governor's Crime Commission.

Prior to joining CCPS in January 2009, Young served as the governor's chief legal counsel and he has also been an assistant Attorney General in both North Carolina and Texas.

Read Across America is an annual program of the National Education Association that coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, one of America's best-loved author of children's books. The NEA calls for every child – from pre-school to high school – to be reading in the company of a caring adult.
